Seaway Community Development Corporation AVAILABLE HOMES FOR SALE2125 W. 72nd Place Calumet City
In January 1994 Seaway Bank and Trust Company established a nonprofit affiliate, the Seaway Community Development Corporation (SCDC), in an ongoing effort to aid homeownership for Chicago's low- and moderate-income families. The affiliate's purpose was to help rebuild area neighborhoods by buying and rehabbing distressed property into showpiece homes. The SCDC has invested more than $2 million in the program to date, and to enhance its efforts, it has received several grants, including a $15,000 grant from the Carson Pirie Scott Foundation (1997), a $20,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank (1997) and a $50,000 donation from National Bank of the Great Lakes (2001). Recognizing that one of the biggest barriers to homeownership was the down payment normally required, Seaway also developed a special mortgage incentive-the 1% Down Mortgage. This program has allowed qualified buyers the opportunity to purchase homes with a minimal one percent down payment and no private mortgage insurance (PMI). For more information on the SCDC, including available homes, contact Daniel Taylor at Annual Art Fair Seaway Bank and Trust Company has a long-standing appreciation for the arts and encourages cultural growth through the annual hosting of its Community Art Fair at the Main bank. The Art Fair is held on the third Saturday and Sunday of August from noon to 6 pm both days. This outdoor event features some of Chicago's finest artists, with works including paintings, ceramics, photography, jewelry and crafts. Winners receive cash prizes in selected categories. The Art Fair is located on the Main Bank's east parking lot, at 87th Street and Langley Avenue. Artists are also invited to exhibit their work for public viewing inside the Main Bank. Bank-at-School Program Recognizing that children are often taught how to earn and spend money but rarely taught how to save it, Seaway participates in the Illinois Treasurer's Bank-at-School Program to help them get an early financial education. Seaway currently sponsors five local elementary schools: Amelia Earhart Options for Knowledge School, John T. Pirie Fine Arts and Academic Center, Maranatha Christian Academy, Arthur Dixon Elementary School and Burnside Scholastic Academy. In September, staff members teach a team of student "officers" how to operate a bank and work as personal bankers, tellers and marketers. On scheduled "Bank Days" throughout the year, typically once or twice a month, students can open a Young Savers Account or make deposits to their existing accounts at the "banks," which are operated entirely by students. For more information on the Illinois Bank-at-School Program, contact Seaway's Marketing Department at 773-602-4865. Internships During the summer, up to 10 students-most of whom are majoring in finance, economics, or marketing-receive full-time, paid internships at Seaway. The 10-week training allows students to go beyond their classroom instruction and experience first hand the various aspects of the banking industry. Since the program began in 1987, some interns have returned following graduation to pursue their career goals at Seaway.
